Chronic absenteeism is defined by VDOE as the number of students missing 10% or more of days enrolled. For the percentage, this number is then divided by student enrollment.

Why It's Important

Research has shown a direct correlation between good attendance and student achievement. Building positive attendance behaviors in the early years is critical in improving not only education outcomes, but also workforce participation. Chronic absenteeism impacts milestone factors like reading on grade-level and outcomes like GPA, student retention, and graduation rates.
